Celebratory and Awareness Raising Events

The group has secured funds sufficient to organise three events to celebrate the diversity of our communities while raising awareness of our aims and the reasons for the forum’s existence!

The first of these events was the inclusion of the LGBT Float at Cleethorpes Carnival on Saturday 26th July. See below for full story.

The next big event is scheduled for Tuesday 11th November (in Grimsby) so put it in your diary! The third and final event will be held in February 2009 to coincide with LGBT History Month. More details to follow!

Prejudice and Pride event held at Institute!

November the 11th saw the second of four awareness raising events co-ordinated by the North East Lincolnshire LGBT Forum. The Grimsby Institute’s main hall hosted a day of workshops looking at ‘LGBT stereotypes’, ‘LGBT and the Law’ and ‘LGBT and health’. This session also included input from Humberside Police and The Prison Service as well as a play and accounts from local people on what it is like to be a minority in North East Lincolnshire.

Special thanks to Sheena MacRae (Programme Coordinator for Sexual Health within the Specialist Health Promotion Service in North East Lincolnshire PCT) for covering 50% of the days cost.

Look out for more details of the next event in 2009!

This activity was funded by The Equality & Human Rights Commission.

FIRST EVER LGBT FLOAT AT CLEETHORPES CARNIVAL!

Saturday 26th July saw forum members gather at The Pear Tree in Humberston in order to decorate the LGBT Float that would later leave Sidney Park and head towards the new Events Arena.

As the photos show the float looked great with its Hawaiian theme and brand new forum banners down each side! A very big well done to everyone involved – there turned out to be a lot to organise and many details (and trimmings!) to tie down. But thanks to a lot of hard work on a very sunny North East Lincolnshire weekend the result was impressive!

The Carnival had 61 floats in total and the organisers were pleased that the LGBT float was a part of the action. As the float passed through the crowd a lady passed a ‘Thank you’ card to a forum member which said ‘Thank you for standing up, standing out and inviting diversity and acceptance’.

We are pleased to say the response from the people gathered to watch the carnival on the day was largely positive with many revellers waving, and some singing and dancing along to classics such as The YMCA!! However, a few inappropriate comments were aimed at the float – nothing serious – but enough to show us there is still some way to go and that the existence and work of the forum is so important for North East Lincolnshire.

Many thanks to Global Shipping and Callmac Scaffolding for their patience and promptness on the day – it was much appreciated. This activity was funded by The Equality & Human Rights Commission.
